Our Vision and Mission
Over thirty years ago, John Lennon challenged us
to "Imagine" a different world. To re-imagine the world, we will need a
new vision, and to conceive a practical plan for acting upon that
vision.
We are certain that re-imagining the world need not involve a wholesale
repudiation of
the past. On the contrary, we are proceeding with a clear understanding
that a vision that springs forth without being rooted in the cultural
legacy of humankind is bound to feel alien and be rejected outright.
Thus there is no avoiding it; the proverbial
bathwater must be discarded, while the "baby" is plucked out of the
basin, clean, refreshed and ready to grow and astound us. Our task has
been set before us.
Throughout this site, the adjective "life-enhancing" makes numerous
appearances. The quality it describes is explained more fully on our
Glossary page. It is this quality we
look for, and use as a evaluation criterion of, in cultural
achievements of the past. Though it may seem simplistic, or downright
naive, to use such a broadly-defined, single measure to judge the state
of our civilizations, we believe that once one has a feel for the term,
it reveals itself to be an incisive tool for dissecting the present
state of affairs.
